dinner is in the oven

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
J and I drove up to Sonoma today. There was a plein air painting festival in the plaza. It was rainy, but not so bad that they had to close down, so we saw neat paintings and walked around looking at cute buildings and nifty shops.

I napped most of the afternoon away, which was pretty fabulous. Now I am making pot roast for the first time in ages. The apartment smells amazing.

I'm undecided how I feel about Sleepy Hollow. I loved Abbie and a few minor things, but in general I didn't feel engaged and the fish out of water thing was a little tiresome in places. I'll give it a few more episodes anyway. I also watched the pilot for Ironside which I didn't think I'd like based on the first few minutes, but as it got more into the characters I got drawn in. Not sure I'll keep with it yet, either. We shall see! I'm looking forward to Elementary coming back. And also catching up on White Collar.

My to-do list today

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

  • Eat French Toast for breakfast

  • Unfuck some key areas of the apartment

  • Attend a corgi’s birthday party

  • Go to the comic book store

  • Rework some page layout on this Losers big bang

  • Finish tailoring a couple shirts

That last one probably isn’t going to happen, but I have high hopes for the other four.

cooking for leftovers is awesome. also welcome to night vale.

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I made enchiladas yesterday with sauce out of a can and it turned out pretty tasty, but they were even better today. The rice I'd made seemed super spicy when it was fresh but seems to have mellowed out overnight, too. I love cooking dishes that actually make decent leftovers, and I think I'll add these into my rotation of typical dinner foods a little more frequently. I haven't made them in several years, and not since I was cooking for more people than just two, so it was a nice change. Also next time I think I'll freeze some so I have a lazy microwaveable meal when I just don't even want to look at the stove.

After coming home from the gym I shaved my head again. I'd pretty much let my mohawk grow out on the top and then just kept trimming the sides and then eventually the back. My work bestie just got a new cut that's not quite an undercut but goes from pixie short on one side to chin-length bob on the other, and since my hair is so thick and grows so quickly, from some angles it was looking similar. I figured I'd just buzz it all down so that her new style stands out more, and this way by the time October comes around I'll have a decent length to spike up if I feel like cosplaying some Teen Wolf.

In big bang news, apparently I can't draw a kitten that doesn't look like a doll. Getting there, but getting there sloooowly. I've been doing all my sketches traditionally, and set up at the kitchen table, which makes me feel like I'm doing homework since that was my default spot when working on painting assignments. The only difference is that now I'm listening to Welcome to Night Vale instead of watching Top Gear. I'm pretty hooked on Night Vale. At first I felt like it was a little too absurdist, but I've really gotten into the rhythm of it now. It's making me want to try my hand at podficcing again, but I need to find a new piece I think I could reasonable tackle in after the last author I wanted to podfic never answered me about permission. The obvious solution is podficcing my own work, but that seems less exciting!

I got my sewing machine out again!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Recently I've gotten used to actually unhooking my gaming laptop from its ridiculous nest of cables on my desk so this weekend I finally dusted off my sewing machine and got working on my dwarf costume. So far, so good, though I still hate sleeves. Why so hard, sleeves? I expected to feel pretty rusty seeing as I haven't sewn a costume in a few years, but it's been pretty straightforward so far.

Other things:

J is using dialogue from Leverage for his animation project this semester. I love it. It's a clip of Parker from the jury episode, and it makes me laugh every single time no matter how often he has to replay the scene. Last semester he noticed that the only students including women in their assignments were the (very few) women, so he's making an effort to buck the trend. Best husband.

After some epic reading on lazy weekend afternoons, I finally made it through my current reading list. I just finished Richard Kadrey's Aloha From Hell. I like the first book in the series the best (Sandman Slim) since the protagonist's goal was really defined, while the other two feel more like he's being dragged along by circumstance. Fun reads though, and I love the way the world works.

I'm now slowly making my way through my company's titles. I started reading Bi today since I was actually scanning through pulling out snippets for marketing. In a lot of ways it reads very much like someone's thesis, but I'm finding it a lot more engaging than the last academics-slanted title I'd snagged from the shelves. So far, the author does a really good job of breaking down the bigger concepts and making them accessible.

My excitement for Pacific Rim is epic. I want it now.

feeling extroverted but too tired to do much of anything about it

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I hyper-extended my left thumb a couple weeks ago while um, rescuing a box of kittens from a pack of rabid wolves. Really though, of all the things, I was turning on my bike light. It was the LED kind that sits on my spokes and I was pushing with about the strength of forcing a tack into a wall, but ugh, if I knew I could possibly injure myself, I would've approached that motion in a completely different way. Lesson learned. Thanks, body. It finally mostly doesn't hurt, and later this week is my appointment with a specialist to make sure I didn't do any long term damage to the joint. Bluh. I had to put a hold on my Krav classes, so I ended up joining the rock climbing gym that my cubemate joined. No climbing for me anytime soon, but they've got a decent amount of machines and a bunch of other fitness classes at convenient times, so it's been nice.

I'm wrestling slightly with feeling stretched thin. Mostly it's that injuring my hand has affected my ability to sleep throughout the night. Add that to how the VFX class I'm taking continues to be difficult and mentally exhausting, and I'm using the weekends to rest and recover. I'm happy that I'm learning a lot, and there's only one month left before I get those hours back.

J and I have begun looking around at other places to live. As much as I like to bitch about my neighbors they're actually pretty okay when not practicing the same song over and over on a mildly out of tune guitar, but we'd love a bit more space and the ability to have a pet. I'd be happy with a cat, but J really, really, really wants a dog, so that severely limits our pool of options. We put in a rental app yesterday for a house that is 95% perfect and I'm really antsy about it. I just want to know now whether or not we're in the running! There's another apartment in the same area that seems promising, but we have extremely reasonable rent in an extremely nice neighborhood to live in, so it's tough to give that up only for the option to get a pet while everything else (no laundry, no yard) is a lateral move. Here's to hoping, and it's nice that we don't have a pressing need to move, so we can take our time looking.

Please give me your address!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I have cards and things and a desperate need to finally make use of them. Also my mom gave me a TON of forever stamps and the postal service reinstalled the mailbox on the corner so it's a sign. If you want fun random things to show up in your mailbox, please give me your address! Comments are screened! If you don't know me very well but want mail anyway, tell me a little about yourself so I have something to write to you about. :D

...and if I had your address previously, I have probably lost it (and by probably I mean definitely) address book didn't import over and I am incapable of keeping a physical address book.

eta: YAY, keep em coming. Also, outside the US is no problem!

small apartment problems

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
So I own the full set of signed prints of Jody Lee's cover art from the herald mage books. I also have nowhere to put them. I haven't hung them since we moved to Berkeley really, but even if I will probably never read those books ever again, I'm not sure I want to let the prints go. They're really lovely and they're also very dark in colour scheme. With my trio of Metcalf's Avengers prints already making one bedroom wall nothing but dark frames and dark backgrounds, I don't know if I want to claim another wall and pack it full of dark prints with black mats. ...maybe I should just hang one and rotate it out every so often. ...or consider attempting a white mat again even if I don't think that worked well before.

Maybe also I should get back to editing alt tags and tweaking keywords.

SEO sucks and is boring, btw.

day two: in which i go mad

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
It is day two of my week of time off. I'm already going a little stir crazy since it's sort of crap weather out and I can't be bothered to put on a scarf and find an umbrella to go take a walk to get settled.

Instead I've already cleaned out all the cabinets and put down cute flowery shelf paper (organizing all the remaining stuff back in them is another project). I've caught up on blogs and tumblr and newsposts and such. I may actually sit down and attempt to draw, although I'm feeling like I have no idea where to start. My life, so hard. *facepalm*

home at a reasonable time, even

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
No more crazy holidays and no more crazy working on my department budget and I'm starting to feel like an actual human again. Despite some ridiculousness with the phone lines going down, work has been good. I'm officially set to have all of next week OFF, which turns out to coincide with Porn Battle XIII. After my vacation time, I get to come back to reduced hours which is so awesome! I can't wait. I've been hoping to get on a schedule like this, with reduced hours in the off-season, and then back to full-time when spring/summer comes around. I'm very much looking forward to only commuting three times a week and using the extra two days for art projects! EXCITEMENT.

Now I am going to tidy the kitchen and make myself some dinner, screw around for a bit with video games, and maybe laze around for the rest of the evening in front of the TV with my laptop and consider doing that WIP meme that's floating around.

oh hay, it's the weekend

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I feel quiet these days. This is probably because I remember when I used to post at least every other day. I've been drawing, and making progress on the two paid gigs I'm doing (one of them is hopefully done by tomorrow, whee). I've also gotten myself a timeline for a lot of the other art obligations that have been woefully unfinished for months.

After J and I got all caught up and current with Doctor Who, he and I are now almost caught up on Psych. I suspect [personal profile] windsorblue will be simultaneously proud of us for finally watching more than bits and pieces and disappointed in me for my shipping tendencies. LOL me.

Another few minutes of working on this piece then I'll be sending it off for feedback. Then I shall make apple-cranberry muffins and possibly more fresh-squeezed OJ to help use up the ridiculous amount of fruit in our apartment. I am thinking more seriously about getting a food mill so I can make applesauce and pear butter.

Hi, internets.

eternally at the last minute

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Last night I got J's waistcoat to the point where it is now awaiting turning and buttons. Tonight I cooked a proper meal and a dessert course and everything. :d

Tomorrow I run errands and hopefully do laundry and a second waistcoat and print shit up for con and alter pants and also find time to do work of some sort. I also need to figure out what other costume things I am taking to con since I only have one new thing this year and as previous years have taught me, I feel weird walking around in streetclothes. I could wear Rorschach again especially since I have zero photos of me in it, but that's really not the best costume to be trying to hold conversations in. Decisions, decisions.

with all the Being An Adult going around I feel proud for Doing Stuff

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Today turned out to mostly be a chore day. Wasn't feeling anywhere near crowd tolerant enough to consider going into the city for Pride so I shall aim for Folsom instead.

- Did so much laundry today I can't even comprehend how long it's going to take to put it all away tomorrow.
- Took three boxes full of used books downtown for cash moneys. $$$
- Bought comic books and art books, then some veggies from the farmers market with said cash moneys.
- Went all the way to the other end of town to get art supplies for J's schoolin with the rest.
- Did enough grocery shopping to make meals to get me through the first of the week.
- Wrote some kink porn after weeks of feeling rusty and incapable of stringing words together.
- Sketched and have convinced myself that a level up actually has somehow happened in the past month or two.

Not really looking forward to doing the workthings I need to before I go in to the office on Monday, but since I spent Friday in the city on some much needed design projects for the storefront rather than my typical end of week paperwork it's in my best interests.

My plan for tomorrow consists of two things: catching up on email and baking a cake. Fuck yeah.

I also feel a bit like painting, but I'll probably work on my Daken sculpture more because I haven't painted in years and I'm going to have to relearn how to paint for class come Fall anyway.

quick post and then i crash

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Recovering quickly from catching J's version of the cold that's been going around. Sleeping a ton, and did a crap job on my last week's homework because of it, but glad to be feeling better. Job things are looking good, although I'm running into the problem of likely hearing back from my second choice first, as they're looking to fill the position asap and my interview went really well.

Attempted to take photos of the apartment, but man, I need a wide angle lens. Will try again tomorrow. :3 I'm loving our kitchen to bits and have been cooking quite a bit. I baked an apple crisp tonight and it turned out delicious. Amusingly, after initially putting things away, the first time I actually cooked a meal I found myself knowing exactly where things were in which drawer and moving with familiarity in the space. I realised that the layout of sink/cabinets/stove is almost exactly like the layout of our friends' kitchen where we housesat every year for almost a month at a time. Go muscle memory.

Wondercon on Sunday was nice. One of our buddies had a table, so we got to chat and catch up a bit. Wish I'd been feeling less out of it so as to actually stay longer in general, but an hour in the artists alley wiped me out completely. Didn't find many goodies for myself since Fat Rabbit Farm didn't have any shirts in a colour I could remotely wear, and the artists I'd bought from last year didn't make an appearance, but found some cool stuff regardless. Glad we managed to get there in time to catch most of the Human Target preview. The episode is still making me all giddy, I can't wait to see it again. And JEH and Mark Valley, so adorable. I flailed. There even managed to be one relevant question from the audience, too. Mark was saying that through filming, despite pulling from various disciplines, Chance definitely has his own fighting style developing. I think that's pretty nifty. :D

More sleep for me now!

This completely makes up for Monsters vs Aliens

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Well, How to Train Your Dragon was adorable incarnate. It makes me so happy when Dreamworks does a good job with an animated film as I find their output so hit and miss in comparison to Pixar. Between that and Repo Men (prrr) that's it for me with movies until the job situation resolves itself. I have good prospects, including an interview coming up for the position I was most excited about amongst the slew of resumes I've sent out so far this week. Time to dig out the hair dryer and prepare to clean myself up for business casual.

Have yet to actually sit down and draw, but have been poking at fic, both finishing up some WIPs and also beta'ing the giant backlog of Blue's poor neglected stories. I also finally did laundry since the move, which means I can start putting clothes away, a prospect which shouldn't be as exciting as it is.

While my food is in the oven, I think I shall actually pop open Photoshop and see if I can paint something.

Productivity Go!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I'm feeling good this morning. Walked home from work the past couple days (in addition to going to the gym) so all the exercise has been nice. I did nothing after I got home last night except watch the White Collar webchat (thank you [personal profile] shadowhuntress!) with Blue and squeal and kick my feet and try not to develop an even bigger crush on Tim DeKay. :x

Had a productive morning, which is probably helping with the feeling good. Did some cleaning and sorting and also fixed myself some lunches to take to work for the rest of the week. Homework is starting to require more attention now that the semester is in full swing, but nothing overwhelming thankfully. My boss got a call from the woman looking over the rental app on our first choice place to verify my employment, so I'm hopeful that we'll find out in the next couple days if we got it. Moving again after only a year blows, but after this, unless J gets a job offer outside the Bay Area, we'll be able to stick in the same place for a while.

p.s. Haven't been commenting much due to reading sporadically, so just a general big wave hello to my corner of the internets. I love you. \o/

oh hell yes, I have a Snuggie

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
We went down to Salinas to J's sister's new place, and holy crap is it huge. It's got a nifty layout, and infinitely more space than their old house. We hadn't seen Natalie since before she was walking so it took a while for her to stop giving J and I the suspicious eye, but by the end of the night it was lots of carry-me arms, and where Sophie is usually all about her Uncle J, somehow this time I ended up with her hanging on me more often than not. I suspect it was that I was wearing a pink shirt so that boosted my coolness rating. It's interesting to see the ways her personality has changed now that she's a big sister. Sometimes I wish we lived a bit closer in order to visit more often.

Anyway, we hung out, ate food, played with dolls, tried to devise a plan to steal their adorable pug, and at the end of the evening I got the bonus of belated b-day gifts. See subject. I have also increased my fuzzy scarf collection by one, so I should probably put out some of the ones I don't wear often out onto the curb.

The drive was nice, and J and I talked a lot about the ways in which we'd like to focus on our projects for school and general creative things. I'm back to having a solid idea of where to go with my current assignments so I'm feeling very rejuvenated about them. Which is good, as I need to be doubly-focused this weekend, since I didn't actually get any extra days off, and the lab is closed tomorrow which is typically my dedicated time to go in and work all day on my homework!
