Star Trek, WWTD, and a Cillian Murphy RPS rec

Star Trek, WWTD, and a Cillian Murphy RPS rec

So here's my belated Trek post. I saw Star Trek on Friday afternoon its opening weekend. I was blown away. They did such an amazing job, and especially to treat the reboot as they did where it just opens up so much potential...I am excited.

From the trailers and my hotwrong Smokin' Aces crush on Chris Pine, I figured that this would be the one to break me on the Kirk/Spock, as I have been a quiet little shipper since forever due to such scenes as Spock catching Kirk in the beginning of V. Consider me surprised when it was over and my fangirling over the Kirk/Spock didn't hit maturation.

It's not the right dynamic between reboot Kirk/Spock to hook me. I usually fall like a brick over the supportive best friend angle but in the reboot, they haven't had a chance to become friends yet, so there isn't much of a connection there for me to care about seeing them roll around naked. On the slashy angle I probably fell harder for the Kirk/McCoy than anything. I think though that I'm pretty satisfied with the AU events putting Spock/Uhura into a canon timeline, as they handled that really well onscreen. I tend to dislike canon het pairings because they're obvious, and it could be that because of the original canon Spock/Uhura blindsided me more than it would have, but I far prefer seeing a connection and figuring out how it can/does/will work rather than the frequently contrived ways that a m/f couple gets stuck together. I love how subtly it played out, from the scene in the lift where I had a brief OMG Please Don't moment at Uhura which developed into OMG YES once everything fell into place. It doesn't hurt that Zoe Saldana totally made me crush in PotC, so I can't ignore how pretty it is too.

I've yet to decide how I feel about Sulu. I adore John Cho and initially it was a lot easier for me to reconcile Cho=Sulu than Pegg=Scotty. I love that Sulu got to kick ass, but from a fangirling perspective I felt through most of the movie that because they were having to reboot everything, that the glimpse of most of the crew we get just wasn't enough. I want to see everyone's backstory and the ways in which the timeline shift has changed everyone! Fanfic could fill this gap for me, but I still wanted more out of canon. :p I'll see how I feel after a second viewing as then I can pay more attention to all the little things. I'll also probably read the Sulu fic popping up on my flist, so we'll see if that sways me into the fandom.

Like a lot of people I was Emotional from the opening sequences, and a little dissapointed with Nemo and the Romulans. Bana was severely underused, however, I'm happily going to read the Urban/Bana RPS.

And that is where I stand. Sorry to disappoint the people who have asked, but you might get a bit of Spock/Uhura out of me or TOS!Kirk/Spock, but that's about it at this point. :3 Perhaps the real culprit is that I am still blinded by the hot mutant on mutant action.

...in other news, if it's true that the guy who played George Kirk is going to be Thor, I am a little flaily. Crossovers! Yespls.

I just read this Cillian Murphy/Ruth Negga fic by jackandahat@DW on chromatic_fanfic@DW and it is smoking hot. Breakfast on Pluto RPF skirtporn is win. There is another one, with pegging, which I've tabbed open for later. slfkjs.
  • You did a fantastic job of articulating why K/S doesn't seem quite as effective as K/Mc and why S/U really did work. I do think that although we will likely also get more S/U in future films, we will also get much more K/S subtext. Time will tell. Until then, I'd be delighted to see some S/U or TOSK/S.
    • Hee, icon!

^_^ If I were more of a rivalslash person rather than a BFF turned Rivals person, I think I'd be more inclined over the K/S as it was in the reboot. I'm with you on what's likely to show up in another feature and I'm rather eager to see how things develop. I could definitely see poly combos all over the crew which would be fabulous with the right subtext and canon couples to play off of.

Though, really, I'd love to see them introduce a canon queer couple. How awesome would that be. :3

There are no words for how awesome that would be. And Star Trek would be just the kind of franchise to do it. And I thought I was eager for more films before...;D

And, yes, the opportunity for poly combos is everywhere.
  • I completely agree with you on K/S, Mc/K and S/U... I am loving the Mc/K I have read so far.
  • but you might get a bit of Spock/Uhura out of me or TOS!Kirk/Spock

Anything you draw would be awesome! :D

Btw, I loved the new K/S myself, but then, I've always been attracted to pairings of rivals/enemies and the like. That said, I'll squee even if you just draw a totally gen piece of any character. :) In art, I don't even have to like the pairing/character to appreciate the pretty. :)
    • :)

I figured it'd be the rivalslash folks that'd love this Kirk/Spock! I'm not sure what gets me on some rival pairs over others, since there are a few that don't have the betrayal angle to mash my buttons.

In art, I don't even have to like the pairing/character to appreciate the pretty.

Hee. I know how that is! I think that's one of the things I love about viewing fanart, since it's instant consumption, I can enjoy something that I might not otherwise have either given a shot or want to put in the time to try.
