Finished up a preliminary drawing for an illustration gig and sent off a sketch for a commission. Also when we went out earlier, I picked up a couple shirts to screenprint on and a cute new shirt just for wearing. In general I mostly took it easy but somehow I managed to do a ton today. Now, more with the timed stuffs...

  • Oooooh! He's lovely! I adore the masculinity (so many artists soften and feminise him, imo) and the direction of the light source. Mmmm to the hair, and the light in his eye. Very nice. :-)

And you did this in fifteen? Oh god... I so do need to practice more!

Btw, I found a picture on your site that has inspired a plot bunny. *g* Would you like to see the fic when it's finished, if ever? (Don't want to presume that you'd be interested, so I'm asking.)
    • Thanks so much! Doing these studies and progressively moving further and further away from the reference is a fun challenge!

Ehe, in part to speed things up what I do with the original reference image is turn it into an index'd .gif of like 8-16 colours non-dithered. That strips a lot of the information out of the image and does a pretty good job of displaying the plane changes of a person's face (well, provided the lighting is decent in the original!) It really helps to work on basic facial structure!

I would love to see fic if the writing cooperates!
  • You and your fifteen minute pics. :D

OMG, he's gorgeous. He looks so haughty and in control and guh. I love the play of light and shadow on his face!
    • I'm loving doing these things. They're really useful, and a good way to warm up or cool down if I have a ton of drawing to do!

^^ Glad you get that from his expression! The reference I worked off of was of Jason from Divorcing Jack so I changed a goodly amount to try and make him look appropriately Lucius worthy!
  • Wow!!!! Nicely done for a 15 minute study!

I really love how one half of his face is light and the other is darkness. It's very fitting for him. I also love how the light hits his left eye and his hair. ^__^
    • Thank you so much! Half the challenge seems to be keeping up a quick pace. In class, I have this horrible habit of working slower with longer poses, so that I end up with the same amount on my paper (if at a different quality) for 5 minute poses as I do with 15 minute ones!
  • God bless Jason Isaacs for giving up our Lucius and wow! Bless you for such a stunning interpretation.
    • ^^ He is just a gorgeous, gorgeous man. After last night, I'm all pumped up to work on some of my unfinished Lucius pieces now!
  • Gorgeous! The light and shadow here are stunning!
    • Thanks so much! I think I'm the most pleased with the tones in the shadowed half of his face!
  • It's very hard to look away from the eyes.
    • As I was working on this, all I could think was man, Jason Isaacs has damn pretty eyes. He has such striking lashes!
  • <333

    His hair! His eyes!

Do you color everything in Photoshop, or?
    • Re: <333

      his head and hair white like white wool, as snow;

O HAI a Bible verse referring to Lucius X-D
      hahaha
      • Re: <333

        XD

        I'd worship at that altar.

To answer your question though, yes, all in photoshop! I use one of the "chalk" brushes, so it has a slightly irregular rectangular/diamond shape, with the opacity set to tablet pressure. I also use a bit of a splotchy blender tool, but that's it. ^_^
        • Re: <333

Oh wow I need to try that out sometime (I do have a Tablet PC). I don't even know that Photoshop has chalk brushes X-D
          • Re: <333

^^ The basic chalk brush should be in "dry media brushes" in photoshop's preset brushes. If that makes no sense, or you ever have any questions, feel free to ask!
  • So so pretty. And done in 15 minutes? WOW!
    • Thank you! Besides working on colour/facial shape, these studies are doing miracles in terms of forcing myself to work fast. I do usually end up a few minutes overtime after I stop, but that's to clean up little details or fool with the overall images colour settings rather than actual painting, so I haven't been counting that. :3
  • dark, mysterious and a great piece of art!
  • This is AMAZING. Even more so than the Sam/Dean naughtiness ^^. I will one day have to commision something Malfoy-esque from you...
  • Oh the texture and the lighting is lovely. And thanks for explaining the technique you've used. (Things like this remind me why I gave up doing artwork twenty years ago - that and a complete inability to understand computers.)

    Fifteen minutes.

    *Gibbers*
    • Thank you, and anytime! I'll have to get back into the habit of saving out more progress shots to mark the way an image changes start to finish. Hee.
  • The frown and light catching the side of his face and shining in his eye like that gives it a sinister quality. Awesome!
    • ^_^ I'm so happy with the lighting on this, especially since the lighting in the reference wasn't that crisp, so it forced me to do a lot of improvisation!
  • Wow! Gorgeous! I love the moody feel of it--very Lucius!
  • Wow! This is truly gorgeous artwork- I love the feel and shading here, especially his hair and eye! Stunning and absolutely wonderful! :D
    • Thanks a ton! I love drawing Lucius, he's just such a strong character in my head!

I think someone else might have commented upon this, but I love how masculine you've kept him. It's good to see a strong Lucius, and I particularly love his hair. Such pretty hair!!!

Oh, and OpenID for some reason isn't working...

I really adore you pictures! I do not have to talk about your skills... ;) Please do some more HP pictures! I so much miss Severus....
  • He looks great! Menacing, as if he was plotting something evil ATM. I love his watchful eyes and parted lips :)

*bows down and worships you, while drooling* this is absolutely gorgeous, and undeniably masculine and just powerful! wow.
